NTBackup utility wont read .QIC files. Your only option is to install
MSBackup in XP system (if available) and extract the files.

Hi,

Try the utility here for that, it has a 30 day free trail. Link courtesy of
MVP Harry Ohrn:
http://www.stompinc.com/trial/index.phtml?stp

Ntbackup will not recognize the file compression used by Win98's msbackup.

Greetings --

There may be a 3rd party solution provided by one of the software
manufacturer who specialize in backup solutions, such as Veritas or
Cheyenne. Otherwise, you'll need to restore the files using a Win98
PC before trying to transfer them to WinXP.

WinNT_2K Backup Does Not Recognize Win9x Backup Files

Actually not his only option. Download the 30 day trial of Backup MyPC from
www.stompinc.com will work. Backup MyPC is actually the Veritas Backup Exec
app that the Windows Backup programs are based on so it will open and
restore .QIC files.

You are welcome. Hopefully stompinc will continue to make the 30 day trial
available as it is the only easy "free" alternative to restoring .QIC files

can the msbackup utility be extracted from the OEM windows 98 CD and installed on the xp pro machine?

No I don't think it will work with XP. If you need to recover data from a
backup created with the Windows 98 Backup program use the 30 day trial
version of Backup MyPC from www.stompinc.com as it can restore .QIC files
