I had a similar problem. After much searching I
discovered that an update to my antivirus software had
changed the settings on the firewall. It seems that
for "security reasons" the firewall by default now does
not allow XP networking. I don't recall exactly what the
setting was but I seem to recall it disabled netbios
browsing.
