cannot re-install xp

i have a dell computer and i cannot seem to reinstall my
xp.
I have reinstalled up to the point where i have my log on
screen, i click on my sign on name and and a window pops
up telling me to activate my copy of windows. How will my
computer know if my copy is registered when i cannot even
start my computer

Did you ever activate. If not, you need to boot to Safe Mode and run
activation from there. Boot the system start tapping F8, at the menu select
Safe Mode, press enter. Then run activation from Safe Mode. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Activation Wizard.
