Fax call answering

Windows XP Fax monitor cannot distinguish between phone
call cadence, ring,ring-pause-ring, ring, and fax call
cadence, ring-pause-ring-pause.My service provider has
piggy-backed a fax number on my existing 1 line phone
line and separated them thus. Fax monitor attempts to
answer all incoming calls creating a nuisance noise in
the phone call.
