View Full Version : Limit User Logon Time

Where do I set the time that a user can logon in Win XP
Pro? The machine is in a workgroup not a domain.

Robert Michon

This cannot be done in a workgroup environment. A third party application
such as Cyber Patrol is necessary.

Hi,

For Pro: Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC Go to Computer
Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security
Options. In the right pane, locate the entry for Network Security: Force
logoff when logon hours expire.

Examples of setting the logon hours would be: You can set them for 24 hours

Or go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: (use as an example and modify)

net user johnsw /time:M-F,08:00-17:00
net user johnsw /time:M-F,8am-5pm
net user marysl /time:M,4am-5pm;T,1pm-3pm;W-F,8:00-17:00

To cancel and/or clear: Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: (Use as an
example) net user Kelly /time:all

Kelly,

Are you saying this setting will actually log the person off the workstation
and set the system back to a login prompt when their login time expires?

If so, then it works alot better in a workgroup environment than it does in
a domain. Althoug the force logoff is active in my domain, all it does
(unless I have something set incorrectly) is restricts access to network
reources such as network shares and printers. It doesn't actually log the
user off the workstation. It will however prevent the user from logging on
when logon is attempted outside the allowed login period. Also, I was
unaware of the ability to set this at individual workstations in a workgroup
environment, which is why I suggested a 3rd party application.

Please by all means explain...I am interested.

Bob,

It behaves similarly in a workgroup environment. It will only restrict the
user from logging on, it doesn't force them to log off. Although, I was
under the impression that it would work as expected in a Domain enviroment
and force the user to log off.
