The computer locks up unexpectedly. The think it was
after updating to newest version of Direct X 9.?
Sometimes the computer locks up half way through disk
scan after hot booting.

Tom,
A few more details from you such as what CPU you have , how much RAM your
system has, what video card (latest driver?), how much free hard drive space
there is, which programs are running etc. would be helpful for diagnosing
such a problem.
A wild guess from what you have said would be to upgrade your video card
drivers, but there's not much to go on really.
Try using Event Viewer to see if any particular program or service is
causing the problem - here's the windows help notes:
Event Viewer maintains logs about program, security, and system events
on your computer. You can use Event Viewer to view and manage the event
logs, gather information about hardware and software problems, and monitor
Windows security events.
To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click
Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer.
For information about using Event Viewer, in Event Viewer, on the Action
menu, click Help.
For more information, click Related Topics'
Hope this helps
