I just upgraded from 98se to xp. At first it seemed to
run OK. On the upgrade report that I printed it said
under Hardware that might neeed additional files:Display
Adapters: Inno3d GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X. So after
installing xp I put in a new driver for my video card an
Inno3d eForce4mx 128mb-8xagp. It still starts but it
seems a little jerky. The Windows loading logo comes up
them I see my desktop then it goes black for a few
seconds and then my desktop comes back again. The opening
sound plays and then stops and then finishes. Like it is
clipped off in the middle.
Any ideas?

Try defragging and cleaning any stray cache files off the
drive. This happens to me also, especially when I first
update the display card driver. Also , make sure you go to
windowsupdate and retrieve all the critical updates. there
are about 35 of them. Most noted is the SP1a express.

What I would normally do is to back up your documents,
pictures and multimedia. (Including any custom sound files
used) , then format the drive and do a fresh install of xp
from CD. Then add your custom sound files to the
windows/media folder. Then change any document file
locations in th registry after install is finished. Also
change the "headerfooter.headerfooter.1" subkey of
H_key_Classes_Root to (under /CLSID) {3050f6cd- ...
This is a MS error located for me by Norton Windoctor.
