View Full Version : Sp1 long startup delay

Since i have installed XP Sp1, windows is taking a long time to boot and be
ready to work with. it takes same time than before to reach the logon
screen, but after that startup programs are actived and after that Norton
Antivirus and Norton SystemWorks take more than 1:30 (after logon) to
activate themselves. During this time, some operations are blocked, like
connecting to internet or going into system properties untill Norton is
fully loaded. This is annoying, and is more likely to be caused by Sp1 as it
was not happening before. I cannot roll back because i have no backup of
installation. So any help to correct this situation is welcome.

Installing SP1 seriously fragments your drive. Try running defrag maybe even
twice.

After installation, i removed all setup (not core) files and put them into a
directory. The new directory is on another drive. Empty space on first drive
is about 10-15mb smaller after install. The defrag application tells me
there is not enough fragmentation to run it.

Do you really need all of those programs loading at startup? Antivirus, yes
but the system utilities could be run "on demand."

Huh, i meant NIS for firewall, not NSW, i think this is vital to anyone who
has a computer. I don't want to get a virus like LoveSan. This affects
people with a Windows OS, but i think i have installed the patch from Ms.

My version of Windows is:
windows XP professional v5.1 build 2600

The problem is really that it takes more time to boot, about 1:30 min. after
logon screen than before XP Sp1 was installed. This is annoying and i look
for something to correct the situation.

Ah, didn't realize the only other portion of Norton's that you had
installed was their firewall and was thinking along the lines of the other
Norton's Utilities included in many of their software "suites."

I agree with you, running a firewall is absolutely essential.

Got it working back. Don't know why as there is a couple of operations. I
got all updates from Windows Update. There is about 19 patches with somes
that need to be installed as standalone before installing others. Windows is
now completely patched. Got updates from Symantec but no answers on their
web site. Updater told me there was no need to update.

Sp1 has made a change on the dhcp boot sequence. Needed to give a static ip
address to first network card so it can boot easier. Sp1 as reenabled
hibernate mode by default. This waste lots of disk space when you don't use
it. So needed to deactivate this and restart in dos-mode. And then remove
the previously generated file. Came back in Xp and then it boots fine!

And not to say to install a patch for OUtlook Express...
Well, that is Microsoft, isn't it?
Thanks for taking time to help.

You might try looking around here.
http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Black Viper

Also you may have a bunch of "Services" running now that weren't running
before SP1.

Indexing Service is a real resource hog. You can get rid of that through
{{ Start-->Control Panel-->Add or remove Programs-->Add or Remove Windows
Components }}

There's a couple suggestions

good Luck!
