View Full Version : Problems with Explorer - CD Writing Wizard

I have been using the Windows Explorer CD Writing Wizard
to write files to CD-R (for backups).

I have run into 2 problems that have resulted in
unreadable CDs, so this posting is a warning to others to
take care.

1 All the data must be written to the CD-R at once.
================================================== =
Even though the Windows Help says that "data may be
copied to the CD on more than one occasion". Try
typing "add files to cd" into Windows Help, and read what
is says - but the Wizard does not work in this way.

After writing the data, the Wizard finalises the CD, so
that it is readable by other PCs, but no more data can be
added.

I have tried to add data to a CD and corrupted the CD.

2 The maximum amount of data that can be copied is about
680 MB
================================================== =====
Even though the blank CDs may be 700Mb capacity, copying
more than 680Mb causes problems.

I tried writing 690MB to the CD using the Wizard and it
completed successfully.

But when I reloaded the CD:
a) Autoplay took 2 minutes to complete (normal time is 10
seconds).
b) Running "Scan with Norton Antivirus" scanned most of
the disc quickly then ran slowly.
c) Windows Explorer - right-click on the CD - Properties
showed a CD capacity of 680MB.
d) Not all of the files could be accessed.

Take care!

Check the Problems section at Alex Nichol's site for a possible fix for
