the WindowsXP version is WindowsXP Professional SP1.
There is only one device directly connected to this machine
(no USB hub).
This problem deals with 1 computer, connected and printing
to 1 printer.
During the installation of this device, I was prompted to
load a port driver(I never have got this prompt before, or
since), and was given two options, one was support for
DOT4_001, the other I assume as for USB001. In my haste, I
accidentially clicked on the DOT4_001 driver and now I
cannot get it back to USB001. I looked at other machines
(same model, same OS) in the local office area, and the
port is listed as USB001 on other machines printing to
same model printer(different printer physically).

Sounds like it's time to uninstall the device. The USB and DOT4 ports will
not go away until you disconnect the device and reboot (it usually takes a
couple of reboots before PnP gives up on the device and the port is removed
from the list). If the driver came with an uninstall program use that.
There are several other good posts that have links for uninstalling the
print drivers completely. Search for the model or manufacture in the
current posts. Once you have cleared out the driver reinstall.
