Click Start/Turn off computer/Restart button. When the system begins to
restart, start tapping the F8 Key until you see a menu on a black screen.
Use the Arrow Keys to select the Safe Mode option and press ENTER. If you
see a login screen, press ENTER again to login.

Hi Robin,
You shouldn't have to boot to Safe mode to defrag. However, all you really
need to do is hit F8 as soon as the system POST (often covered by a
manufacturer's logo screen) ends and just as WinXP begins to load.

Robin,
When you start the computer, before Windows XP launches (starts) press the
F8 key until you see the Advanced Menu where you can select Safe Mode
startup. It is a bit tricky but possible. One warning, you cannot do it this
way if your keyboard is hooked up via a USB connection since USB is not
enabled until Windows XP starts. If your keyboard is hooked up via USB, you
will have to do this:
A. Start/Run/type "msconfig" less the quotes/click "OK".
B.The System Configuration Utility will open. Under the General Tab,
Checkmark "Selective Startup". Then open the Boot.ini Tab and Checkmark
"/Safeboot". If any "Apply" Or "OK" boxes need to be clicked, do so.
C. Exit the Utility. Shutdown the Computer and Restart. You, if I am
correct, will restart with an option for Safe Mode.

I agree with Rick (below). You do not have to go into Safe Mode to defrag. I
do not and have never experienced any problems.
