I just loaded XP and I'm trying to use an old HP 500
printer. When the printer is added, it slows down the
whole system. A quick look in the task list shows
SPOOLSV getting much of the CPU. If I kill it, the
system returns to normal until SPOOLSV starts itself
again. For now, I've removed the printer all together
and I'm OK. HP states there is no updated driver for it
other than the one that comes with XP. Does anyone have
any suggestions as to whether this printer just isn't
supported on XP or if there is a microsoft patch for XP?

Ensure the LPT port in the BIOS is set to EPP.
