I can't seem to download "doc" files with my new computer
which uses Windows XP and Microsoft Works. Am I don't
someting wrong or do I have to buy different software.

Did you mean to say you can't "open them" with Microsoft Works? If so, have
you tried opening the file from within Microsoft Works? If it works there
but not by double clicking the file itself, then try this: From Windows
Explorer, select Tools/Folder Options/File Types tab, scroll down to DOC
(under registered file types), select change or advanced and then select
Microsoft Works as the program to Open the file with.

Jennifer,
You can also try using the MS Word 97/2000 Viewer that can be found at:

A .doc extension means MS Word is required to fully utilize the document
with it. I have both and Works won't open Word creations. If all you want
to do is just view it, go with Rich's link.
