View Full Version : Separate Start/Programs menu list for different users

In W98 I could have different Start/Programs lists for different user
desktops. In my XP installation they are all the same, and I can't
find out how to change them. Install something in one desktop and it
pops up in the start/programs list for all the others.

Is this just a Microsoft "improvement" or is there a way to
differentiate?

In W98 this and other related differences between user settings could
be fine-tuned in TweakUI Not so in TweakUI for XP

Arrange the items in the different user folders under C:\DOCUMENTS AND
SETTINGS. The ALL USERS subfolder should contain items that you want
to have avialable from all profiles.

in fact, different user accounts are more separate in xp than they ever were
in 9x. if you look in the documents and settings folder on the root of your
hard drive you will see a different folder for each user that logs onto the
machine. each of these folders contain separate "profiles" - one for each
user, and a few for the os. so, each user does, in fact, have his/her own
custom start menu (and desktop, and explorer settings, and ie settings,
etc.). what you need to do is go into the '..\documents and settings\all
users\start menu\programs' folder and remove any programs you do not want
all users to see. the "all users" profile contains settings that apply to
every user that logs onto the machine, regardless of privileges or
permissions. then, you can go into each user's profile and customize the
start menu any way you like. remember, though, this will not prevent users
from being able to use programs removed from the start menu, as they will
still be able to launch any program by browsing to its executable in the
program files folder.

Thanks, both of you for your help. I'd figured out there would
probably be separate areas, but I have a follow-up question if I may:

OK I can move entries for existing installations, but how do I make
each user's future installations register in his own Start menu only,
and not in "All users"? Now, if I install anything it goes into every
desktop, therefore, one presumes, into "All users". In 98 you were
asked if you wanted this separate Start menu option when you created a
new user.

That's just what I can't do though. If I delete anything, in any
desktop, it is deleted from all, Ok I understand why. But if I install
anything ... see above.

You don't do this. It depends on how the installer works if the
application installs for all users or a single user only. Simply
re-arrange the shortcuts to the new applications afterwards.

I'm not sure how the installer thing applies if you get your computer
with Windows already installed. But I use 98 on another computer, and
there when I install something the shortcut is in my profile.

Windows 98 does not have an ALL USERS profile folder, the user profile
handling is different.
