File transfers from old comp... to new comp...

I need to transfer my old files and software from my old
pc with millenium to my new HP pc. with xp...
I have a crossover ethernet cable and am told this is the
fastest way to do it..
However I haven't been able to figure out the whole
procedure ... HELP..:( ANYONE....:(
