I'm no computer whiz but I think that something in my XP
is messed up because any time I try to install a printer
[clicks on "add a printer"], I get an error
message "Operation could not be completed" Please all you
computer geniuses an' masters, HELP please! Happy new
year to all, may microsoft make its next windows less
prone to be messed up... anyway, help!!

First ensure you're logged on as an administrator or a user with admin
rights.
Next ensure the print spooler is running. From the command prompt, type
net start spooler
(and hit enter)
If still nothing, from the command prompt, type
sfc /scannow
and let it complete, reboot an try to add the printer again.

There's a gap (space) between the sfc and the /scannow
