I apologise if this is a silly question but is it possible to display
PowerPoint presentations on a TV screen and if so how ?

Yes, it is possible.
You would need a video card with TV out,
or a converter to convert the VGA signal to TV.
You can find the hardware to do this at most larger computer stores.

You need a graphics card with a TV out format option to
match the TV format. This could be S-video, component or
even a channel. You can also get graphics cards that can
have TV in. TV will be grainy compared to a monitor, about
half the resolution.

You can get big monitors or a projector that will do a
better job. You might be able to rent a projector.
