My windows xp home edition doesn't have "microsoft word",
only "microsoft works". How can I get "microsoft word
2002" or convert files to use in both programs?

If you need Microsoft Word, you'll need to purchase Microsoft Word
and install it on your computer.

Neither Windows XP nor any other version of Windows has ever come
with Word or with any other significant application software. It
din't come with Works either, although in this case your vendor
bundled it with the package he sold you.
If you want Word, you need to buy it, either alone, as part of
Microsoft Office, or, most inexpensively, as part of Microsoft
Works Suite.

Your computer manufacturer bundled the application WORKS
with your computer. Windows XP is an operating system and
operating systems do not include applications.
The least expensive method of getting WORD is to buy (not
sure if there is an upgrade) to the MS WORKS SUITE which
includes the full version of WORD for about $100. You can
buy WORD as a stand-alone program for $150.
You can buy MS OFFICE which includes WORD, EXCEL, and
PowerPoint as well as OUTLOOK. The Pro edition of OFFICE
also includes ACCESS.
If you are a teacher or student you can get an academic
version of OFFICE (std or pro) but the license is for
student/teachers only and is not for business use.

You can save files using WORD or WORKS in a universal format
with an .rtf extension. Also WORKS and WORD download sites
on Microsoft have converters so they can open and edit files
from the other program if the normally installed converters
don't cover the versions you have.
