View Full Version : Upgrade hoses ISP connection

Just made the mistake of upgrading from a perfectly working W2000 pro to
XP Pro. When I tried to connect to the internet, I get:
"Unable to create a connectoid, reinstall modem"

Reinstalling the modem didn't work.

I queried the external modem and it responded correctly.

When I viewed the dial-up connection for my ISP, it wasn't there.
When I tried to add it, I got:
"Cannot locate Remote Access Connection Manager Service. Error 711 Click
more info or search help and support"

Well, "more info" isn't there, and "help and support" doesn't work(part of
a long list of things that don't work in XP).

Q330163 states I should go into Services and start Remote Access
Connection Manager Service (RACMS) which gives error: "Could not start
RACMS on local computer. Error 5 Access is denied." When I try to
start Remote Access Auto Connection Manager (RAACMS) I get the error:
"Error 1068: the dependency or group failed to start."

Another MSKB recommends I install SP1 to fix the problem. Unfortunately I
have yet to find a location I can download this from Linux (what I'm
currently using).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See #1 on this link:

If that fails, you may consider starting again after verifying all
hardware and software is compatible with Windows XP:

I just reinstalled and it effected nothing.

Did you check the "service dependencies" for RACMS, as the error you are
receiving is "it can't start" because something (another service) it needs
is not started. I believe "Telephony" service is a dependency, and
"Telephony" depends on Plug-n-Play and RPC services.

Telephony service starts without error. Trying to start Remote Access
Connection Manager Service (RACMS) gives error: "Could not start
RACMS on local computer. Error 5 Access is denied." Unfortunately the
error message tells me nothing as to the cause. While trying to start
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager (RAACMS) I get the error:
"Error 1068: the dependency or group failed to start." Again the error
message doesn't tell me which dependency is unmet.
