View Full Version : Getting rid of a default I set on a dialog box

Shemp McGurk
April 25th 03, 08:34 PM
I wanted to download an audio file from Xdrive and when I hit the
Download button, a dialog box came up asking me whether I wanted to
download the file to my desktop or play the file on multimedia. I
inadvertently choose "play the file" and noticed a little box that was
ticked off next to text that said "don't ask me that again" and I then
clicked "OK".

Well, I didn't really want to play the file; I wanted to download it
to my desktop...but since I went ahead with the checked-off
instruction "don't ask me that again", every time I want to download
it, it automatically goes to the XP multimedia player ( which can't
play the file anyway).

How can I reverse the "don't ask me that again" that I accidently let
go through and, instead, have the dialog box come up again so that I
can choose "download to desktop"?

I thank you in advance for your attention to this question.

Delete the file you played and clear out the internet temp files ( run disc
clean)..

I couldn't even play the file because multimedia said it couldn't
(adding insult to injury!) so I can't delete that file.

Where can I find "internet temp files"? Is it disc clean that will
clear out the interenet temp files...and where in my computer do I
find disc clean (I am a total novice, so please excuse me...)

In Windows Explorer go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types. Locate the
entry for file type in question (AVI, MP3, etc.). Highlight it and click
Advanced. Check the box for Confirm open after download. Note, some media
types will automatically play regardless of this setting. In this case,
right click the link and select Save As.

Sorry, I finally understood what you meant...I stupidly tried to find
"folder options" under INTERNET Explorer instead of Windows Explorer.

Anyway, I followed your instructions and it still didn't work...as
soon as I did the download instruction, it did the same thing as
usual, which is to try and play it on multimedia (which it doesn't
even do).

I then tried to do the instruction to "right click the link and select
Save As" but I dont' understand which "link" you are referring to...

If you have a clickable link to the media file, right click it. There should
be a Save Target As choice. This will work with some media files, and some
web sites, but not all.
