I have W2000 and am trying to upgrade to XP. This error
is covered in KB article 280824, but it doesn't help
much.

It says:

To resolve this behavior (to upgrade or to install
Microsoft Windows 2000, or Windows XP), the user must
obtain the following system rights:
- Back up files and directories
- Modify firmware environment values
- Restore files and directories
- Shut down the system

I believe I have these rights and have tried logging in as
administrator as well as power user, but still get the
error.

All help appreciated

First you must Upgrade to XP Pro (not XP Home) from 2000 Pro.
Also, load up Computer Management, Local Users and Groups and check
that your user is a member of the Administrators group. Power Users do
not have enough rights. If not, logout and use the built in
'administrator' user instead.
