This morning I rec'd 3 e mails.....all of them the same
message...from Microsoft.
"this is the latest version of security u pdate,
the "September 2003, Cumulative Patch"
As instructed, I immediately downloaded the update.
My computer went completely wacky....the Norton AntiVirus
sent out 46 e mails that I did not write....they came back
saying "undeliverable mail contains virus"
I turned off the computer completely.
When I turned it on again...screen is completely blank.
I have been able to get on line by doing
"CTRL ALT DELETE" and getting onto certain programs that
way.
It is a big puzzlement finding Microsoft phone numbers for
help. I chose this method of asking for help, not knowing
how else to get attention...
Hope someone out there can send me to a technical place
for help by phone number....thank you.

Microsoft did not issue a "Sept. 2003 Cumulative Patch". You have been
unwittingly deceived into installing a malicious VIRUS in your computer!
W32.Swen.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that also attempts to spread =
through file-sharing=20
networks, such as KaZaA, and IRC, and will attempt to kill antivirus and =
personal firewall=20
programs running on the computer.=20

Greetings --
Why on earth would you now fall for a "scam" that has been
well-known for months?
What you received is either a very common malicious hoax or the
output of a computer infected by one of several well-known,
wide-spread, mass emailing worms. The most widely-known are:
W32.Gibe_mm
W32.Dumaru_mm
W32.Swen.A_mm
Microsoft never has, does not currently, and never will email
unsolicited security patches. At the most, if, and only if, you
subscribe to their security notification newsletter, they will send
you an email informing you that a new patch is available for
downloading.

Information on Bogus Microsoft Security Bulletin Emails

Any and all legitimate patches and updates are readily available
at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. (Notice that this is the true
URL, rather than the bogus one that may have been contained in the
email you received.) Any messages that point to any other source(s) or
claim to have the patch attached are bogus.

The OP does not seem to be a frequent poster. I'm wonder where you draw your
conclusion from that she is.

Is this the windowsxp.BASICS newsgroup? (pardon my shouting)
Why do people naturally assume everyone reads all the postings and has
complete knowledge of these computer beasts, the most complicated and
frustrating piece of electronic wizardry the normal household will ever
purchase?
I've been using computers for a fair while but still get perplexed and rely
on others for help.
Don't knock the newbies/oldbies and should-know-betterbies!
There....that's out my system....now when are they going to bring in the
death penalty for all these virus emailers?.....I have had 98 so far!!!!!!
