View Full Version : OE removes access to attachments

Today I received an email from MS Security Services advising me to install
the SEPTEMBER 2003, CUMULATIVE PATCH. It advised running the attached file
(patch41.exe).

The problem is that OE brings up a message which states: 'OE removed access
to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: patch41.exe'

Needless to say if Outlook Express removes access to attachments (it has
happened on numerous occasions before) is there a problem with OE6.0 as it
can only be assumed that attachments from Microsoft Security are safe.

Would appreciate comments

A devious sender is "spoofing" Microsoft and attempting to deceive you
into installing a malicious VIRUS in your computer! Delete the VIRUS
laden message immediately!

*** Microsoft did not issue a "Sept. 2003 Cumulative Patch"! ***

Paul B. Carnall:
1. This is a bogus email. It is not from MS. The attachment is a virus.
Delete it.
2. There is a security feature in OE which does exactly what you mentioned.
If you wish to disable it, go to Tools>Options>Security; uncheck "Do not
allow attachments..."; click OK. Be sure you are running an updated
antivirus program.

First, Microsoft DOES NOT send out unsolicited patches; they must be
downloaded from the erbsite. This is a viru, so disregard and deleye yhe
message.

Attachment access can be achieved, if need be, by going to
Tools>Options>Security tab in OE and unmarking "Do not allow attachments ...
virus". After reading your post, however, I'm seriously considering
rechecking that here.

Greetings --

It's a good thing Outlook Express is doing your thinking for you.

What you received is either a very common malicious hoax or the
output of a computer infected by one of several well-known,
wide-spread, mass emailing worms. The most widely-known are:

W32.Gibe_mm

W32.Dumaru_mm

W32.Swen.A_mm

Microsoft never has, does not currently, and never will email
unsolicited security patches. At the most, if, and only if, you
subscribe to their security notification newsletter, they will send
you an email informing you that a new patch is available for
downloading.

Information on Bogus Microsoft Security Bulletin Emails

Any and all legitimate patches and updates are readily available
at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. (Notice that this is the true
URL, rather than the bogus one that may have been contained in the
email you received.) Any messages that point to any other source(s) or
claim to have the patch attached are bogus.
