Shouldn't be a problem, but if you have to talk to a MS PA phone rep to
activate the second installation [highly unlikely], I wouldn't mention
the bit about it being installed twice on the same computer. I'd just
tell them that I did a hardware upgrade, but that's just me. You have
to come to your own decision about what's right for you.

MS would tell you that you have to buy a second copy.

No. You are only permitted to install one (1) copy of Windows XP
and just one (1) computer. A second installation requires a new license
(Product Key). Otherwise, Product Activation will fail.

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.
Then click on "End-User License Agreement" for clarification.

You can also open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and hit enter. Click on "Questions and answers about the EULA".

Despite the other post, the answer is that you will be in violation of the
End User Liscense Agreement for Windows if you do and you may not be able to
activate the second copy.

You need to buy another copy of Windows.

This has been the source of some debate. The answer to whether or not you
can activate without incident is yes. Activation won't present much of a
problem for you because Windows Product Activation requires significant
hardware changes before it locks you out and asks you to call the Activation
Center. Installing to a different hard drive on the same system would only
be seen as one difference in hardware configuration and WPA looks for
several changes. Alex Nichol's has written an excellent paper on WPA
http://www.aumha.org/a/wpa.htm

However, and at the risk of stirring up the wrath of those who dislike
Microsoft's Licensing policy, if you read the End User License Agreement you
will note that you are only allowed to install one copy of the software on
one system (albeit you can reinstall as often as you like). Using the same
Product key to install XP on two drives (or different partitions) on the
same system would seem to be a violation of EULA. The debate about this
often revolves around usage. Because you can not run both installations
simultaneously are you in violation of the agreement. The answer would seem
to be yes given that the EULA explicitly says "one copy of the Product....."
it does not say you can install multiple copies on a single computer.

"You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Product on a
single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device

Despite what you say, MS has never proven they have the right to tell
people what they can and can do in the privacy of their own home. You
may accept MS's BS on faith, but most rational human beings will wait
for real proof before they do.

The 2nd activation will not fail. I run with a 120gb master and a 20gb
slave, both have XP activated on them. I have them in removeable drive
trays and can just unplug the 120gb and boot from the 20gb and windows could
care less.

No wrath from me, Harry. You presented the truth information, along
with your opinion.

Activation should go smoothly, but MS EULA doesn't allow it. A PA
paradox!

I have to disagree. I have XP Pro installed three times on my computer and
I have told the person from Microsoft when I activated what I had done.
They told me I can install my copy of XP on ONE computer as many times as I
like including simultaneous installs on a muti boot system. I haven't tried
this yet but it may be possible to activate one copy and then clone it using
Norton's Ghost. Multi boot systems make a lot of sense in many situations
such as if you test a lot of software.

As Harry quoted:

"You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Product on a
single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device
("Workstation Computer")."

It seems to me that the qualifiers for this scenario are the words "use"
and "run" in that sentance; you can only run and use one operating
system at a time on a single computer.

I suggest (to be sophistical) that if you install, and then do an exact
clone of the partition to another, it is still the same 'copy'. But
this is one of the places where the EULA is sloppily worded - another is
in the matter of transfer if you bought an OEM version with say a Hard
disk. What it actually says, and MSoft's interpretation are in conflict
(though overall their interpretation is probably better for the user)
