I have put a Maxtor 40G disk in a USB enclosure case and
connected it to my PC via USB Version 2 adapter card. The
system tells me that the device has been installed
successfully and is ready for use,but when I go into 'My
Computer' there is no sign of it,unlike when I connect my
digital camera or any other USB device. It is listed in
device manager as a USB hard disk and further down under
USB Serial Bus Controllers it is listed as a mass storage
device. Both these entries in device manager disappear
when the drive is switched off.If I populate volumes in
the properties box it indicates Type: Unknown, and
Status: Not Initialized.(compared to Type: Basic and
Status: Online, for disk 0) Is this why I can't see the
disk and if so how do I change the status to online. Any
help will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards and Happy New Year to you all,
Malcolm Murray.

Malcolm,

Have you formatted the Maxtor 40 GB disk? Windows will not see the drive
unless it is formatted.

Fred

Thanks for the reply Fred. How can I format the disk when
I can only see it in device manager?
Thanks for your help.
Malcolm.

You have to install one or more partitions. Those partitions will then
be given "drive letters". Once that happens you can use the
partitions. Check Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Computer
Management|Storage|Disk Management for tools to install and format
partitions.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

In its My Computer - Drives section make sure that the letter assigned
to the drive is checked - best to check all of them

Hi Fred,Gerry and Tim,
Thanks for your help regarding my problem.Formatting
the disk and running it as slave did the trick.I would
have thought that being a 'stand alone' device it would
have been configured as master,but then,what do I know.I
have learned a lot about disk management as well.
Thanks again,
Malcolm Murray.
