Program installation hangs

While attempting to install office XP on my PC which runs
Windows XP Pro the installation hung half way through the
install.

I got the same problem if I tried to install an individual
component of Office e.g. Word.

I get a similar problem when I try to use Add/Remove
programs to activate IIS.

Any ideas?
