I have received over 135 bogus emails and virus threats today. I started
Outlook about fifteen minutes ago and it is still pulling in mail (present
count is 52 and still going) on this bogus Microsoft thing.

Open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select:
Help > Contents and Rules, type RULES in the find box,
click on LIST TOPICS, then click on "Create a rule for
mail messages".

You need to create a message rule that includes an "action"
to "delete it from the server".

Have you taken any defensive measures to minimize the problem, such as NOT
using your real email address in NG posts, or creating a message rule that
deletes from the server any incoming email that does NOT have your real
email address in the TO or CC line?

Perhaps it will teach you not to put your real email address out on the net,
in newsgroups, order forms, etc. I have received exactly 0. For anyone
looking for a solution for when you need to enter an email address to
receive an order number, confirmations, serial number, etc., the free
service Mailinator, http://www.mailinator.com/mailinator/Welcome.do is very
clever. Instant email, no signup, perfect for one time use.

Don't go blaming the victim or, for that matter, patting yourself on the
back. My address *is* on the Internet, and I've also received exactly 0. I
also have addresses that have *never* been used as real accounts (only to
send test mail to myself) that get piles of spam.

I have done the first for years now (with limited success) but as to the
second, my IE6 only allows me to specify "who" is in the "TO" box, not who
is "not". How do you do what you recommend?

I know it's true that spammers often harvest addresses from newsgroups.
I've been using this throw away account for 6 months now to post to
various newsgroups, however, and have received no spam & no virus laden
emails. My work address, which has never been used to sign up/register
anything or posted on the Internet (including newsgroups), has received
several virus infected emails this morning.

I believe this one is propagating through address books & stored email
addresses on infected HD's. Throw away accounts, such as the one you
advertised, will not prevent the receipt of spam and/or viruses.

I think filtering would be effective in this matter, though. So maybe
Chris can setup a rule or implement a bayesian spam filter to help weed
out the infected messages.

Hi,

Are you using a real email address when posting to these newsgroups? If you
do, i suggest that you fake it by putting some words in it, that a human
being understands that he/she should remove. This will decrease the number
of spam emails and viruses sent to you.

Well, I'm not "advertising". I mentioned a free service which is a very
clever way to receive email one time, such as for confirmations, without the
risk of being spammed as you might if you used a real email address. And
there are no others that use the same method as the one I "advertised", with
no signup, no information given, just make up an email address on the spot.

You need to create a message rule that includes an "action"
to "delete it from the server".

Good idea, but in this case there's way too much variety.

That service and ones like it are useful, but sometimes it's also
appropriate to have a permanent, public address.

I think what's dictating whether someone with a permanent address is being
nailed by this latest worm is whether that person's ISP or email provider is
on the ball or not. For example, the Hotmail people headed this one off at
the pass it seems, while another mail provider I have is obviously asleep in
the control room. If they'd just configure their gateway to dump these in
the bit bucket, users on that service would never see them.

I've followed Symantec's instructions but still am getting some of them.

Any other suggestions.

Hi Dave. While creating that message rule, once you click on the "add" key
and type in your email address, you will see that the "option" key is no
longer grayed out. Click on that key and you will see 2 choices. Select the
"not" choice.

That's only for if you're infected, in which case you'd be SENDING them.
Getting them, that's something else entirely.

Don't quite understand what you are referring to about SENDING and GETTING.

I'm being bombarded with bogus emails supposedly coming from Microsoft and
other junk. I've run the anti-virus twice and it shows there is nothing
there. I"m modify the registry as instructed and am still getting all the

If someone's PC is infected by a virus, the user could unknowingly be
SENDING a poison email to everyone in his/her address book every time he/she
uses their email program. On the other hand, if that person has not taken
sufficient steps to protect their system against such attacks, they will be
vulnerable to RECEIVING a poison email every time incoming mail arrives.

I think that it is about time that you revamped your email system.
It is no longer feasable to use unless I want
to get all of this junk. Most of these bots just use a dictionary
approach starting with _a_ and ending with _zzz_. If you are
using a major provider you are going to get this junk. I use a
munged email address from a defunct domain.
I receive nothing, nada.

Use Spamnet...spamnet.com..works by scanning message headers and is
effective...you highlight offending messages and click Block..messages from
that sender get sent to the folder of your choosing...like Deleted! also
uses the collective prior blocks of all users to mark messages as
Spam...your blocks are added to other users block lists

For Microsoft Office Outlook users;

Go to your webbased mailclient of your ISP. If you have a good provider it
will let you set mailrules here. Set the rule to delete or move to another
folder to prevent it from downloading into your Outlook.

Hope this helps!

That's useless because the sender address is most of the time faked.
If you do so, you're just having your revenge on innocent people.

In fact, it is the thorw-away addresses that will never get this one
because, as you say, it is using address books on infected computers and
those will always contain good addresses, with few exceptions.

Brian.Tillman is the name, smiths-aerospace.com is the domain.

I don't speak for Smiths, and Smiths doesn't speak for me.

Swen will cull email addresses from newsgroups and web pages as well as
address books!

Taken from the following article:

"Searches .html, .asp, .eml, .dbx, .wab, .mbx files on the hard disk for
email addresses"

Note first that Microsoft does not send out these types of messages unless
you very specifically request it. Instead, the vast majority of these
messages are attempts to install virus-type programs on your computer.
Therefore, your best bet is to delete these messages without delay (don't
open them or attempt to install them).

If you want to prevent these messages from downloading (large messages
take time to download), set Outlook to not download messages over a certain
size. Somewhere around 25K is a good size, since this will allow most
messages without attachments to download, but will stop most messages with
attachments. At this point, Outlook will download the message header without
the rest of the message, allowing you to see who the message is from. If you
don't want the message, simply delete it (highlight and hit X button). For
messages you want to download, right-click and select download from server.
When you're finished, hit the "send/receive" button again and Outlook will
delete the messages you don't want off the server and fully download the
messages you want. Read help menu about setting maximum download size (it's
an account option, not a filter).

Several people have already asked me how to do this. You can find this
setting in...

Options...
Mail Setup...
Send/Receive Button
Select All Accounts and then press Edit Button.
Download only item description for items larger...

Somewhere around 25K is a good size, since this will allow most messages
without attachments to download, but will stop most messages with
attachments. At this point, Outlook will download only the message header of
large messages, allowing you to see who the message is from. If you don't
want the message, simply delete it (select message and hit X button). For
messages you want to download, right-click and select download from server.
When you're finished, hit the "send/receive" button again and Outlook will
delete the messages you don't want off the server while fully downloading
the messages you do want.

I use this method exactly to avoid those nasty messages claiming to be
Microsoft updates and fixes (works every time). If this also works for you,
please help spread this advice around to help others.
