I'm running XP. After a period of time the computer
grinds to a halt. The Windows Task Manager shows a
process SVCHOST which is consuming 99% of the CPU. Are
there any XP specific patches for this problem?

Svchost is a sort of Windows XP "Global" process. See the
following MS TechNote for more details

Hi mikez,

Open Windows Explorer to C:\Windows\System32\wins - do you see an
svchost.exe or dllhost.exe file in here? If so, then you are infected with
the Welchia virus or one of its variants. While those file names are
legitimate, the real ones are in the system32 folder. The virus uses those
names to disguise its presence in task manager.
