Hello
I would like to set up a WinXP host to be DHCP server for a privat local
subnet.
How do I do that?

You can't, as far as I know. You need either a Windows server
installation (expensive) or a router/switch with built-in DHCP-server
(could be inexpensive).
That is, of course, not taking special software into account. In XP it's
not built-in, as it is in 2000/2003 Server.
Andre.

You need to obtain DHCP software and install it to run as a server on
XP. I've not heard of such a thing, but with some searching of Google
you might be able to find something. It would be very obscure.
However, this sort of software is standard with Windows server products,
and with Linux distributions. You also can get your own DHCP server
with basic router/hubs from Linksys, Netgear, etc.
That being said, what's so hard about using fixed IP addresses? Unless
you have scores of machines that change, why not just set it up manually
and avoid the cost/hassle.

Get a Linksys router to do the job instead. A BEFSX41 is a Router / NAT
firewall that also has a DHCP server built-in to it.
