The "restore" function has stopped working. It worked
before, but not, regardless of the restore point I choose
(and I have tried several) the result is always that the
machine cannot be restored to the chosen restore point
and to try another.
Is there a fix for this?

Hi Thomas,
The only fix is to restart System Restore. Unfortunately, this results in
the loss of all existing restore points. Control Panel/System/System Restore
tab, disable on all drives. Reboot and reverse the steps to reenable it.
