Very poor and dangerous advice, Nicholas, especially with the spurious &
realistic-looking 'MS' email which is prevalent at the moment.

Part of the body of your first url says -

"Each time an update is released, subscribers receive an e-mail message that
explains in nontechnical terms why we are issuing the update, lists which
products are affected, and provides a LINK"

That's almost exactly what the new virus one does, the only difference is it
provides "the attachment"!

At the moment, Automatic Updates is the ONLY way to go, with the option to
download manually selected.

Microsoft will notify you, via email, of a security update.
They will not send you the actual update via an email attachment.
A link to the appropriate Microsoft web site will be provided.

Actually ,this is the best advice.

Since the e-mail notifications you receive detail the issue the fix and
provide a link/url (NOT AN ATTACHMENT) to a download location on our
servers.
This is entirely inline with our published policy on e-mail with attachments
see
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/policy/swdist.asp

That's exactly why I put the word 'link' in CAPS, Mike (& Nicholas).

I wonder how many people not completely up with PC terminology think a link
is just something you have to click on, whether it IS a url link or an
attachment.
The actual article heading says "Subscribe to be Notified by E-Mail When
Security Updates Are Released"
but does not specifically outline the difference between a link and an
attachment - (a trap for the novice).
From that 'home" page, it takes you directly to the sign-up page.
I find it amusing, for want of a better word, that the article was released
only 2 days before the virus appeared.
