Somehow I corrupted some "My Documents" file titles such that they now begin ~$ followed by part of their original title. When opened, they are gibberish letters in individual boxes. How can I restore the files to eliminate the ~$ prefix?

These are temporary files created by Word or Excel while the original file
is open - when Word or Excel is terminated abnormally, it leaves these file
behind, as they are normally deleted when you close the document/file.
