I just bought an OEM copy of windows xp. i received the
oem preinstall kit disc and the regular windows disc.

i was not sure what the oem preinstall kit was and didnt
think about it, and i installed the regular windows xp
disc. windows is not working. i do not know what to do.

i imagine i have to uninstall windows and install the
preinstallation kit but i do not know how. i cannot
install the preinstall kit with windows already
installed. please help me.

There should be no need to run the OEM Preinstall Kit if you are a home
user. The OEM OPK is for Microsoft OEM System Builder members who use it to
create unattended installations/rollouts of oem branded pc's. You may need
to reformat and reinstall again just using the OEM XP CD.

Here is what is happening now. I forgot about the
preinstall kit. i choose to install windows and the files
are being copied to the setup folder (or something like
that) and once this is done, the computer reboots.... only
to take me back to the beginning. the only options i have
at this point are to mess with my bios or reinstall
windows. ive reinstalled it about 5 times probably... to
no avail.

Do not press a key when XP reboots even though you see the message. Doing so
will simply restart the setup process again. Instead wait 5 secs for the
boot to pass from the CD-Rom to the Hard Drive as the setup files have been
copied there. If you are not pressing a key you might want to ensure that
you don't have a stuck key that is doing this.

Another option would be to copy XP to the Hard Drive and install from there.
Plato has a bootdisk here that can help you with that
http://bootdisk.quickhosting.net/xpboot.exe Pop a floppy into the drive
after downloading and double click the xpboot.exe file to create a boot
disk.
