View Full Version : Upgrade to Windows XP Using Windows 95 or Compaq Restore CD

Can I upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition using an old Windows 95 disk?
The Microsoft site doesn't list 95 as a valid version for the upgrade
rate.
If not, can I use that silly "restore CD" that I received when I
bought my Compaq computer in 2001? It has Win 98SE on it, but also
has all of the other useless programs that come along with a mass
produced, chain store computer.
FWIW, I plan on performing a "clean" installation.
Thanks,
Gary

You can't upgrade over the top of a Windows 95 installation, but
you *can* do a clean installation of XP and use a Windows 95 CD
as proof of ownership of a prior qualifying version.

"Restore" disks of any type will seldom work for doing a clean install of
the upgrade version.
