can't install win XP

I can't even get Win 98 to start at all. The links
provided in the reply didn't help. Here are the specs for
my computer:
Dell Latitude CPx H500GT BIOS Version: A07
Pentium III-500 MHz
Level 2 Cache: 256KB
System Memory: 192MB
Video Controller: ATI M1
Video Memory: 8MB
Audio Controller: ESS Maestro 2E
Primary Hard Drive: 12073MB

I also went back to Staples and exchanged the upgrade for
the regular Win XP start up system..
