I have read that, when using Windows Explorer, the size
of thumbnails can be altered. Anyone know how?

If you have XP SP1 installed, TweakUI v2.10 for Windows XP SP1/XP =
MCE/2003 [147 KB].

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Explorer - Thumbnails page provides for control of size and Quality.
Don't set the quality above about 2/3 the way top the right - it
actually then results in an unpleasant greying of the thumbnails
