playing avi files

[chimp]

as a total computer muppet i'm having problems playing
avi files. i get sound but no image. mpegs are fine.
any suggestions anyone?

Chimp,
There are quite a few formats for avi's out there.
Xvid, DivX, MPEG4 etc., so try getting the G-spot file analyser
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
which will analyse the file and tell you which 'codecs' you need to install
to view the avi file.
Once you know the codec needed, you can search google for it and download
it.
Windows Media Player is a good player - one of the best in fact, but it's
not always too quick to adopt
the latest compression technology.

QuickTime Player plays most AVI's.

Also worth getting the DIVX codecs.
