If this is not the correct forum for my question, please refer me to the
correct newsgroup. In the past few days, I have received hundreds of emails
from many different senders, telling me to download and install the
"September 2003, cumulative patch". This morning I received about 150 emails
of this sort. Is this happening to everyone? Something dreadful is wrong. I
would appreciate an email reply as well as a posting here. Many thanks.

This is not from Microsoft, and the attachment contains a virus.
Do not do as it says.

Probably not everyone, but to many, many people.

It's not very different from a flurry of any other virus
attacks--Blaster, for example.

I know the feeling myself as of today I have over 300 emails from different
sources advising me of the same thing. I would assume its a virus
replicating itself through unprotected PCs and servers. Probably the only
thing you can do in this situation is to purchase some spam filter software,
say for instance spam killer from McAfee and change the settings to delete
your killed mail every 24 hours. The new version of McAfee should be out
within the next two weeks in the retail boxes and probably via download. You
might have to change the filters to recognise the emails you do not want so
they can be killed, but this is pretty much straight forward. This assumes
you use Outlook or Outlook Express as your local email client
