View Full Version : Windows Explorer sound file duration issue

In windows explorer, you can select the option to see the duration of
sound files, like mp3 files. However, the duration of flac or wav
files does not show up. Why is this? Can the wav file durations be
displayed or is there a converter embedded in WE that only works on
mp3 files?

Thanx for the insights.

Use the Sound Recorder for .wav files.
Go to Start/Run and type: sndrec32.exe and press OK.

MP3 contains a lot of relevant information - actually in the file. which
is where explorer reads things like Duration

WAV (not sure about flac) does not store enough information in its
headers,

Neat...didn't know that one was available. It is only part of the
problem I am addressing, however. What I do is get duration and file
names...a backdoor to getting a play list. That is my main goal, to
create playlists with track/duration information. The MP3 works great
in WE, but wav's do not...so I have to continue the time-consuming
conversion to MP3s, which I don't really use past that point...I throw
them away. So, what I was trying to accomplish was to find out how to
get the "duration' function in a WE window to show durations for
Waves. Still, sndrec32 is a nice find.

Any other suggestions? Or can't I get there from here?

So, it is not calculating it? The ID2/3 info for files doesn't contain
durations, as far as I can tell, so it must really be a
calculation...and the algorithm is just not available for wav
files...flac's are easy and fast to turn into wav's but getting the
mp3 files takes a long time...which I would like to avoid.

Any other insights? Or am I stuck?

Thanx for the suggestion.
