A-L-W-A-Y-S back up your personal files and any programs
for which you do not have the installation disk before
doing ANYTHING that affects your operating system. No
exceptions. I even back up before installing some
critical updates.

Even if the upgrade is "simple" and "guaranteed to work"
and "piece of cake", make a backup

Backing up your files on separate media will save you
much weeping and gnashing of teeth.
