I just got a Dell and it is a slow start up, the blue
windows screen appears and the the desktop, in about 30
seconds, the start up sound for windows goes. Then it
sits there for about 3 minutes and then the sys tray
starts opening. The things in the sys tray are Norton
Anti-virus and the dell alert. After the sys tray opens,
I can use the computer as noramal. Every once in a while
IE will lock up. any help is appreciated. thanks

Download BOOTVIS to check what services are running that could be causing the slow boot times. One major issue to look into is your Hard Drive settings in the BIOS. I am using an SATA 150 drive that is on IDE Primary 3; so to improve performance I had to
go into Device Manager-->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers; Right Click on the Primary and Secondary IDE Channel, select Properties, select the Advanced Settings tab and look at the Current Transfer Mode text box for each device listed. If the Current Transfer M
ode says "Not Applicable", then set the Device Type to "None" which will prevent XP from searching these channels upon boot.
Also check the Prefetcher - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters and set EnablePrefetcher = 3.
