Norton has detected a trojan virus in the following
files. It is unable to remove it from my computer. The
location of the virus is in the following:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SLMSS\slmss.exe.

I have tried to delete the file in windows explorer but
can't.

What does the slmss.exe do, can it be deleted in safe
mode and if so, please advise how to do this correctly.

Thanks.

1) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
2) Please reboot your PC into Safe Mode
3) Perform a Full Scan of your platform and clean/delete any infectors found
4) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
5) Re-enable System Restore, reboot the PC
6) Create a new Restore point
7) Please report back your results
