Greetings,

How do I use the XP CD to restore original files? I don't mean
installing/uninstalling, but somehow windows checks system files and
replaces the "ill" ones with good ones.

Thanks, Mark

I think it's "sfc /scannow" in the "run" command.

Place the CD in the drive and go to Start/Run and type SFC /SCANNOW

This will run the System File Checker and replace any corrupted files.

You can run System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
Click Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
In the open box, type sfc /scannow (including space) and then click OK. Note
that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.

Is this process smart enough not to replace files that
were upgraded after the original installation, e.g.,
through Windows Update? Or is it looking specifically for
corrupted files, rather than the latest versions?

It checks version numbers as well. If any files are corrupted or the wrong
version, it will normally be replaced with the back up copy from the
dllcache folder.

Put the CD in the drive, exit the Autorun, then go to Start - Run and
run the line
SFC /SCANNOW

Will this also work using a OEM "restore" CD provided by so many PC
manufacturers?

Only if there is an i386 folder somewhere on the hard drive. Most restore
CDs are image files of a working XP on the hard drive.

I rather doubt it, but you never know. It really depends on how the OEM
made the image and installed the system. Many OEM's have an i386 folder
on the C: drive to which you can point sfc.exe instead.
