I read that "Speech" should be a control panel item, but
it's not there. I don't think I removed it, but maybe I
did. Could you tell me how to make "Speech" available?
My big goal is to get the "text-to-speech" going. Thanks.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load

Look in the right pane for a value called speech.cpl If it exists, right
click the speech.cpl entry and select Delete.

Hi Greg,

Do you have Office installed, if so:

The speech recognition engine must be installed. It is available with
Office XP, but it might not have been installed.

NOTE: If you remove speech recognition, it is not deleted from your
computer. When you do so, speech recognition is no longer available as a
text service and it is prevented from being loaded into memory. You can add
it again at any time.

Clicking Start> Programs> Accessories> Accessibilities> Narrator will start
the text-to-speech application. Use Windows key + U to bring up the
Utilities Manager if you want to configure it to run at startup.
