Just ran my virus check ... no viruses.

Just defragged and have the following ...
Fragments File Size Most fragmented files
2 184 KB \WINDOWS\Debug\UserMode\userenv.log
2 16 MB \System Volume
Information\_restore{BA94D48C-614C-4D26-B1DB-4E07E9E692E2}\RP188\snapshot\_R
EGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE

I'm running WINXP PRO that I installed myself on a clean new hard drive. I
have 480mb of ram and an AMD CPU running at 1.66 Ghz (not overclocked). My
hard drive is an 80 gig Maxtor. My board is an ASUS.

The problem I have is that I can't install or uninstall ANY
software/drivers. There are no messages at this time. The computer just
freezes when I try to install/uninstall, although other programs work. To
shut down I have to turn off the power ...Control/alt/delete doesn't do it.

I have received messages that said that another insallation was in pogress
and needed to be finished. I also some time ago received a message that
burner's drivers were incompatible with WINXP and I should contact the
mgfr...HP doesn't support the HP CD-Writer on WINXP .. no updated drivers.

I believe that the offending software/drives relate to my HP CD-Writer 9300,
which I have been trying to replace with a CD-RW that states it is
compatible with WINXP. The two items I want to uninstall are HP DLA and HP
RecordNow. The HP CD-Writer 9300 was on my case before I upgraded the hard
drive and installed the hard drive; it worked fine with WIN2K. With WINXP
the drive would read a CD, but not write.

I have taken the HP CD-writer off the case, and added a new CD-RW, but can
not install the new CD-RW.

Now I can not install or uninstall anything.

" This problem may occur if you have a large number of INF files in your
%windir%\Inf folder. In this case, Windows incorrectly searches the
whole INF folder for information about which drivers to update instead
of searching only for currently installed drivers "

If you find the above is the case, go here :
