I'm based in the UK and am trying to source Appleworks 6.1
or better(an earlier version would suffice)to operate with
Windows XP HE. My wife's a school teacher and use Macs in
school and most of her work is done on Appleworks. I'm
advised by many, including my nearest Apple dealer in
Glasgow that it is not possible.
Is this the case?

Appleworks is designed to work with the Mac OS, not with Windows.. trust the
local dealer..

Yes, the advice you've gotten is correct. It is not possible.
Apple software and PC software are not compatible, although there
are some products that are made in versions suitable for both.

Why would you NOT trust your local Apple dealer?

While that is correct. It is very foolish just to "trust the local
dealer..", as too many of them lie to make a sale.

lol :o)
And remember, G5s are the fastest personal computers.
(C) Apple Computers. The G5 was specially configured, and the Dell computers had hyper-threading disabled.

Yes, and many of them don't lie, but just have no idea what they
are talking about. Selling computers and parts in a local store
is a low-paid job; in many cases it doesn't pay more than minimum
wage. For the salaries these people are paid, it's very difficult
to get informed people. If they knew anything, they'd have a
better job.

MS WORKS and AppleWorks are not the same, but they may be
able to read and write cross platform if the files are saved
in a compatible form, perhaps transferred by TCP/IP. But
without an emulator on one or both computers, the file
formats are not compatible.

I wouldn't trust a local dealer if he told me that green grass was in fact
green.. but in this case, the dealer was right.. it could just have been a
lucky guess, however..

AppleWorks for Windows version 5.0.3 works just fine with Windows XP. The
same with version 6.2.7. In fact, since your wife is a teacher, she may even
be able to get an educational discount. See...

Of course, you'll have to check Apple's UK web site to find if anything
similar is available there if you can't order from the US.

I have AppleWorks for Windows running under XP and it is a fine program.
In fact, its import and export capabilities are very impressive, which makes
it an excellent cross platform tool. However, it's not a bad program even
for those who have no need to transfer files to and from the Mac platform.
