I have a new computer for my son that will not be connected to the internet. It will be used to run MS Office, DVDs, CDs, and games. I have tried to disable all the automatic-connect features I have found, but the computer still hangs up and always "tryi
ng to connect". Should I abandon XP and purchanse 2000 or ME for a computer that will never see the internet.
I'm not dark-ages, we have a family computer with a cable modem (98SE) . I just don't want the little 14 yr old loose on the web late at night. The MS website never listed "internet access" a requirement for XP. Is it assumed that the internet will be av
ailable? I have 26 days left to register.... Thanks.

Can you elaborate on where you see the "trying to connect" message, and what
the message says? You can run XP just fine with no internet connection, so
it's possible that one of the apps you have installed is trying to do this.

You will still need to briefly connect to the internet at some point in
order to register XP (although you could also do this over the phone).

Thanks.

I will get the exact wording tonight and reply to this post. Microsoft will accept my COA by phone, but if I cannot resolve these issues, I will put the XP on the internet-based computer and but another version. I really want to keep XP if possible. From y
our reply it sounds possible. Thanks, awol

Disable or physically remove (if possible) any networking devices,
including a modem. It can't connect to anything if there is no device
with which to connect.

You definitely don't need to have an Internet connection to use Windows
XP. You can call Microsoft to activate. It sounds to me like perhaps
your MS Office program needs to be activated, and if that is so, MS
must have a phone number to call. Look in the Help file under
registration and/or activation.

There are several programs around that will try to connect to the net to
download updates, search for things and so on. You need to go into
individual options and turn these off (Windows Media player and Real
Player are two).

Also Help and Support - take its Options, Set Search Options, and
uncheck 'Knowledge Base' (which implies looking on the internet). Same
in My Computer - Search, make sure that it does not have 'search the
internet' selected
