Home Page Setting Changes Unexpectedly, or You Cannot Change your Home Page
Setting
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320159

Remove IE Restrictions & Restore Missing tabs. Download a fix from:
http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/sramesh2k/reg/IE_reset_restrictions.reg

The problem may be due to:

1. A spyware. Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system
and eliminate the malware products. Re-apply the above fix if necessary.
** Remember to update the pattern file using WebUpdate in Ad-Aware **

( Caused by a malware called CoolWebSearch. Also, Download:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip )

2. You have enabled SpyBot immunize (protection) feature or any other
similar software.

Internet Explorer Control Panel Restrictions:

Be sure to open Internet Explorer to the site that you want for your home
page. Then use Internet Options> General> Use Current.

Sharon,

The problem is that the user can't change it, no matter if they've browsed
to a page or not.

Some programs can lock the user out of the homepage, some
are desirable and some are not.

SpyBot Search and Destroy can be set to prevent unauthorized
homepage changes to prevent homepage hijacking. This can be
desirable but inconvernient if you turn this on
unintentionally.

Some programs hijack your homepage and then lock you out,
but unlike SpyBot (NOT spybot, the virus) you can't easily
change the setting.

Get SpyBot from www.security.kolla.de and it will remove
dialers, hijackers, etc and return control to the user.

I realize that can happen Doug but since they did not mention how they were
trying to set their home page, decided to repeat the obvious. A lot of
beginners miss that "nuance" of the Home page settings - the button will be
grayed out until a page is displayed in the browser.

Ramesh had the other angles covered - when the button is always unavailable
no matter what - so I skipped those :)
