Does Microsoft have any upgrade options to upgrade to XP
Professional from XP Home, or do I need to go out and buy
a new license?

Thanks in advance.

You need to buy an upgrade version of XP Professional. Although it
doesn't say so on the box, that will upgrade an XP Home system to XP
Pro.

Ah, but here is the question, can you upgrade the Home version (pre-installed on PC) with the XP Pro Full version (vs. the Upgrade Version) without having to deal with creating a new partion and moving/reinstalling your other software? In other words, can
you with the Full Version of Pro, install over/upgrade the existing Home Version, or do you need to start from scratch?

Full VS Upgrade installs the same way, the upgrade demands proof of
previous OS, either installed or an install CD, that's all.

You can do either.

Yes. The full version will allow you to do either an upgrade or fresh
installation.

Whether you're upgrading from XP Home or from some other older
operating system, the Full version can do either an upgrade or a
clean installation.

However, be sure that it's a Full version you have, not an OEM
version (which many people confuse with the Full version). The
OEM version can *not* do an upgrade, only a clean installation.

Yes as long as it is a 'retail' boxed version 'for PCs without Windows
or with Windows 95' , and not one of the OEM versions 'for supply only
with a new computer'. It does not mention upgrading on the box, because
it would be presumed that if you had a qualifying Windows you would be
buying the cheaper Upgrade CD

Please confirm you mean that the version to buy is the "full version" (not the upgrade version) of XP Professional.

No - buy the Upgrade one if you have not done so. The question was
whether you *could* use the full retail one if you had bought it - you
can, but it would have cost more

Add - three variants:

Retail Upgrade (needs evidence of a qualifying product, and XP Home
would suffice)

Retail Full - will upgrade, but needs no such evidence

OEM - cheaper, but will *only* install clean and *not* upgrade; and is
also licensed solely to the machine concerned and carries no right to
later transfer to another
