1. What is displayed on the right hand side of explorer
is the contents of the bucket you have selected on the
left hand side... So if you have your C drive selected on
the left hand side, all of the contents (files and
folders) will be displayed on the right side. There can
be some files hidded (or protected) and you can customize
the way it is viewed by selecting Tools then Options from
the top menu of explorer.

2. New Folder (two words) is the default new folder
name, if you already have one folder with the name New
Folder then the next default name would be New Folder (2)
then New Folder (3) and so on.

3. To open an application you could do any of those 3
things, plus more! You could click on a data file that
would launch the correct app. You could use the quick
launch bar. You could be so crazy as to link a program
to buttons on your keyboard or mouse (depending on the
keyboard and mouse you own). There is no right or wrong
way in this case, it really depends on you and what you
are trying to accomplish.
